Good morning!! The first pull is at 7.

Hi, we're Dana and Curt! Everything in this shop is from scratch: the bread rises overnight on a starter named Abe, the croissants get rolled by hand the night before, and Marisol builds cakes you order ahead. When the shelves are empty we close, and I will apologize about it on the chalkboard.

(She will. We have photos. –Curt)

Order a cake See today's board

Here's the board, you guys!

Every loaf rises overnight on Abe, our sourdough starter, fed twice a day since 2019. Bread hits the shelf at 7 and we bake until it's gone, not until closing. Dana letters the chalkboard each morning and I print this version on Sundays, because a chalkboard is not a system of record. –Curt

Every day we're open

Certain days only

Day-olds are half price when they exist. They almost never exist!!

Want us to hold a loaf?

Call (913) 555-0228 before you head over and we'll set one aside with your name on it. We hold until noon. Noon only!! Fair is fair to the walk-ins.

The case (get here before 11!)

All the laminated things get rolled the night before and baked from 5 a.m. on, so the case is fullest right at open. When something sells out it's out until tomorrow, and yes, I will feel terrible about it the whole rest of the day.

Coffee is drip from Messenger down the road, $2.75. Free refill while you wait for bread!

First cool morning of fall, come in. The butter laminates like a dream and you can taste weather, I swear you can.

Cakes!! Please give Marisol 72 hours.

Marisol Rey runs the cake bench, she is one person, and she would rather do six cakes well than sixteen in a hurry, so orders close 72 hours out. Butter cake or chocolate, filled with jam we put up in the summer or with chocolate custard, iced in swooped buttercream. No fondant, ever. She'll write on it in piped chocolate if you keep it under eight words!

Call (913) 555-0228 or email cakes@wheatpenny.com

If you get the voicemail, leave the date twice! Marisol answers between bakes, usually by early afternoon. Thank you thank you!

The penny Curt pried out of the wall

This building was Kastner's Shoe Repair from 1948 to 1991, then a bunch of things that didn't last. When we gutted it in 2018, Curt found a 1944 wheat penny standing on edge inside the back wall. On purpose? Lost through a crack? Nobody knows! It's taped to the register with the tape gone all yellow, and it named the bakery before we'd agreed on anything else.

Did you find a wheat penny in your change? Bring it in and your coffee is free. The jar behind the counter is at 214 pennies and counting!!

(She counts them every New Year's Day. The count is accurate. –Curt)

Come see us!
